The facts are gradually emerging on what led to the tragic handling of three COVID-19 patients that were recently admitted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH.
According to an unsigned Internal Memo, purportedly released by Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, the hospital had at no time released any official result that was negative regarding the three patients.
The release also revealed that both the initial and repeat results by ISTH were all positive and they were duly signed by the head of laboratory of the institution.
It will be recalled, that Prof. Darlington Obaseki had in the wake of media exposure of the unprofessional handling of the COVID-19 patients in UBTH blamed the wrong laboratory test result that was sent from the management of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for the preventable exposure of doctors, nurses and other patients to the virus.
The situation eventually led to the death of one of the three patients. Perhaps more worrisome is the fact that over 75 workers of UBTH have been forced into isolation with possibility of hundreds inpatients and outpatients infested with the virus.
