In a swift action to save the dwindling fortune of the Ambrose Alli University, Edo State Government today May 11, 2021, dissolved the Governing Council of the state university.

The Vice Chancellor was also removed and replaced with Prof. Osahriemen Benson Osadolor from the University of Benin as Acting Vice Chancellor.

The visitor to the university, Governor Godwin Obaseki drew his authority from the newly enacted ‘Ambrose Alli University (Special Intervention Powers) Provisions Law 2021 to take the two decisions.

Edo Government explained that the intervention became necessary because of the ongoing impasse in the university. The actions are in the interest of the school, students, and the generality of Edo State.

“For some time now, the institution has been brought to its knees by mismanagement and maladministration, forcing the students to remain at home with the attendant adverse effect on their academic pursuit.

“This has also grounded activities in the academic community, with the institution derailing from the vision of its founders.

“Fulbright Scholar, Prof Osadolor is to immediately take over the administration of the institution towards revamping and reposting it to become a forward-looking, innovative and technology driven of higher learning.” A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government explained.

It will be recall that the fortunes of the university have been drastically wilted over a period of time. For instance, the school was closed down for several months in the 2000 academic session by the government of Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, when it became the reservoir of cult related activities in the state.

Before this latest intervention, students were forced to remain at home for several months due to strike action by the academic staff of the university.

An Instagram account holder, peculiar_precious, while reacting to the news, praised the governor and demanded for the trial of the sacked VC by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.

“The current VC has done a lot of damage to the school, sack him and EFCC should pick him up too, peculiar_precious pleaded.
