Chiefs from the Palace of Oba of Benin and Enigies have called on Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki of Edo State, to fulfill his promise to build the Benin Royal Museum, that will house the returned artefacts from Europe and other parts of the world.

Their call is contained in a statement signed by Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyase of Benin, Chief D. U. Edebiri, Esogban of Benin, Chief M.N.O. Ozigbo-Esere, the Osuma of Benin and other chiefs from the Benin Palace.

The statement was read at a press conference in Benin City, on June 23, 2022.

“We are very happy and delighted over the return of Benin Artefacts taken away in 1897 following the Benin invasion by the British Soldiers.

“While thanking President Muhammadu Buhari for his role in ensuring that stolen artefacts are returned to their original abodes, Chief Igbe called on the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki to fulfil his pledge of supporting the construction of the Benin Royal Museum instead of building another for which a part of the Benin Specialist Hospital has been demolished.” The Iyase of Benin, said.
