Sokomba has confirmed that a doctor treating COVID-19 patients at the Irrua Specialist Teaching
Hospital, Edo State, has contracted the Covid-19 disease.
Dr. Sokomba disclosed this last Thursday, April 2, 2020 on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise
Daily’ telecast.
“Just yesterday again, one of our doctors in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, Iruaa, had tested
positive for the COVID-19 disease.” The Residents Doctors President said.
He added that: “…what that means is that these
doctors that are testing positive to various diseases are being left alone
to take care of themselves.
“There is no form of life insurance for them. There is no form of
compensation. To say the least, what these doctors benefit at the end
of every month as hazard allowance is N5,000,” Sokomba added.
It will recalled that a nurse working in the Federal health institution had in an audio message that went viral, warned of impending crisis due to poor management of the teaching hospital.
Principal amongst the complain was the lack of ‘running water’ in the wards and non availability of hospital consumables. The whistle blower was subsequently identified and suspended by the management.
Midwest Herald investigators who visited Irrua yesterday were told that the Chief Medical Director, Prof Sylvanus Okogbenin was unavailable for response.
The confirmation by Dr. Aliyu Sokomba has vented Midwest Herald story that exclusively reported on Wednesday that a “doctor and another staff” of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua have tested positive to COVID-19.
